Procedure for taking a drinking water sample yourself

The sampling of drinking water for analysis for official purposes must be performed by a person authorised to carry out such accredited sampling.

LABTECH provides accredited drinking water sampling in accordance with Decree of the Ministry of Health No. 252/2004 Sb., and relevant Czech technical standards.

In the case of analysing drinking water for your own use, control, etc., you can take a drinking water sample yourself according to the following procedure:

  • remove the aerator or similar end from the tap - outlet
  • remove mechanical impurities
  • rinse thoroughly (2-5 minutes)
  • draw the sample into a clean sample container (a clean PET bottle is sufficient for physico-chemical analysis)
  • burn the end of the tap with a flame (e.g. with a lighter)
  • rinse briefly with water
  • take a sample for MIB analysis (a sample container from a laboratory is required!)

After collection, the sample needs to be transported to the laboratory as quickly as possible. If immediate transport is not possible, the samples must be kept in a refrigerator. The maximum time from collection to delivery of the sample to a laboratory is 24 hours.
